A third of the elite athletes who participated in a recent survey reported that their oral health impacted their training and performance, while almost half of the athletes had untreated tooth decay.

87% of these athletes use sports drinks, 59% consume energy bars and 70% use sports gels.

What some athletes might not appreciate is that these items contain sugar and acidity that contribute to oral disease (gum disease and cavities) by enabling “bad” oral bacteria to thrive and flourish.
